How PFT World Reduces Lead Times for Low-Volume High-Mix CNC Orders Through Digital Process Optimization

More and more of our clients are requesting low-volume, high-mix CNC orders—multiple different parts in small quantities, often with tight timelines. To meet these demands, we’ve optimized our digital workflows over the past six months, reducing average lead times by 28% without increasing costs.

What changed? First, we upgraded our CNC programming software and implemented automated CAM programming for common part geometries. What used to take our programmers 2-3 hours now only takes 30-45 minutes, speeding up the process significantly. Additionally, we reorganized our production scheduling to group similar material and size jobs together, minimizing machine setup times between different jobs.

We also added a dedicated quick-turn cell for small jobs, with three CNC machines exclusively handling orders of fewer than 50 pieces. This ensures smaller jobs don't get delayed by large-batch production runs. Since implementing these changes, our on-time delivery rate for low-volume orders has improved from 86% to 98%, which our clients greatly appreciate.
